Arlene House, built in 1905, was the house the last Kapitan China of Perak, Kapitan Chung Thye Phin (1879-1935) lived in. He was of Hakka ancestry and a man of wealth, with business interests in rubber and tin mining.
He was bestowed the title Kapitan China by the then Sultan of Perak, Sultan Iskandar Shah, under advice from the then British Resident for Perak, Colonel WJP Hume.
Today Arlene House is a famous landmark of Ipoh, bringing you back to colonial times when the British was a dominant player on the world stage.
