The Istana Besar, one of the most significant landmarks of Johor Bahru. was built in the 1860s and faces the Tebrau Straits (also known as the Straits of Johor). The Grand Palace is where official state functions are held : royal functions, investitures and state banquets. It was refurbished in 1989 and again in 2014.
