The National Monument, Tugu Negara

The Tugu Peringatan Negara or more commonly referred to as Tugu Negara, is a complex located in Kuala Lumpur, adjacent to the Perdana Botanical Gardens.

The complex that houses the Tugu Negara also houses the Kuala Lumpur Cenotaph, which was originally erected by the British colonial administration.

The Cenotaph was originally located elsewhere but later transferred to the complex when works on the Tugu Negara complex began.

The Tugu Negara was designed by an Austrian, Felix de Weldon, who also designed the USMC (United States Marine Corp) War Memorial located in Virginia, USA. Works on the Tugu Negara began in 1963  and it was finally opened to the public in 1966.

The conceptualization of the Tugu Negara complex is to honour the approximate 11,000 dead from World War I (1914-1918), World War II (1939-1945) and The Malayan Emergency (1948-1960).

The Tugu Negara was damaged in August 1975, when explosives were used by subversive elements to try to destroy the Tugu Negara. However, only two of the sculptures were damaged and restored soon afterwards.
